vettaveliyan

I find the little creature's life always amazing
Room No 126 of Lohit hostel is prohibited for lizardsbecause my room mate is afraid.
I used to have a lizard friend when i was a paying guest in pulpally during the initial days of my college.
He was so cute.I call him "Pallikkuttan"
One day morning i painfully realized that he died by my own hand while closing the window tight the night before. An uncurable scar in my heart. But lizards here in Delhi weren't so cute.In fact they frightened me with their size and aggressiveness. It was my duty to take the broom and shoo away lizards if it manage to enter our room.

It was then one day i noticed a "vettaveliyan"in my room.
I dont know its name in english. It looks beautiful with its yellow colour and was very energetic dancing around always. Initially i was a little skeptic if it would sting me. But then i realised it had some other intentions.
I never used the lamb above my table bcos it has electric shock.
Due to lack of one of the screws  there is a small hole on the body of the lamb.
I saw vettaveliyan searching out my entire room to find the hole in the lamb as its home for generations to come.
The next step was to clean up the hole giving me head ache as i had to clean my table each time this naughty creature cleaned its new house.

one day another vettavelyan accompanied the first one.
the next day the hole was covered with a white covering material.
I wondered how these creatures can enter inside!
Then i noticed one vettaveliyan had disappeared and the other had a pattern to come and go.
It seemed the one which kept visiting was guarding their home.
one day unknowingly the way to their home was blocked by the peacock feather which i admire.
the vettaveliyan was so much unrest that day.
Interestingly i found out that when ever the guarding vettaveliyan comes in a small door was formed in the covering material.A passeway to exchange food and care to the partner!

My happiness knew no bounds! amazed by the creature's love i refrained from disturbing them in any way. Years have passed. I don't know how many generations of vettaveliyan would have had their genesis in that little house. Though the frequency is less vettaveliyan visit my room even today. But i will leave them and the room soon..am afraid will the next occupier of this room ever find them attractive, their love so charming. Wish they aren't killed out of fear. sigh...
